A Bed for Kitty by Yasmine Surovec

A sweet story, simply told. The older readers will enjoy it as much as the pre-school set will.

Bright colorful illustrations draw the youngest reader's attention, expressive drawings tell the story alongside the written word.

"Kitty loves sleeping." says the opening spread. There is Kitty on the table, peacefully asleep.

"And Chloe loves Kitty."

"But Kitty does not love her new bed."

Three easy-to-understand sentences and we have the whole story—the characters, the setting, the conflict. Chloe gets a new bed for Kitty, Kitty sleeps everywhere but on the bed. Why? Each page a talking moment—"Why does Kitty like ….."

We have to wait till the last page to get the answer: Kitty loves Chloe and the family, and each place that she chooses carries a scent, a reminder of her humans. The new bed does not. Till Chloe sleeps on it! Now it is not some strange new thing. Kitty sleeps—on Chloe! who is asleep on the bed. Purr. Not just a bedtime, but an anytime story.
